WHAT IS ULCERATIVE COLITIS?
Ulcerative
colitis (UC) is the main reason for irritation and ulcers (open sores) in the
large intestine (also called the colon). It fits to a group of conditions
called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It frequently causes diarrhea
with blood, cramping and urgency. Occasionally these symptoms can awaken a
person up at night to go to the restroom as well.
The inflammation in ulcerative colitis typically starts in
the rectum, which is near to the anus. The inflammation can spread and effect a
part of, or the entire colon. When the inflammation happens in the rectum and
lower part of the colon it is known as ulcerative proctitis. If the whole colon
is affected it is known as pancolitis.
There’s no cure for ulcerative colitis, but proper treatments
can calm the inflammation and it will help to feel better and the person can
return back to his\her daily activities.
